Measuring success
Our Mission
Green Food Australia is a purpose-driven social enterprise transforming organic waste into soil-enhancing solutions. By regenerating soils, reducing landfill waste, and creating meaningful employment opportunities for disadvantaged Australians, we work toward a more sustainable and equitable future.
Theory of change
If we:
-
Divert organic waste from landfill
-
Convert it into high-quality soil enhancement products
-
Offer these products to growers, gardeners, and communities
-
Employ and upskill disadvantaged Australians
Inputs
-
Organic waste from councils, farms, food businesses, and residents
-
Circular economy infrastructure: shredders, de-packaging machines, inoculation vessels, and composting sites
-
Partnerships with local councils, farms, community gardens, and social services
-
Investment in training and job-readiness programs for disadvantaged individuals
Activities
-
Collection and processing of food, green, and aquatic waste
-
Bio-enhanced transformation of waste into humus-rich soil conditioners
-
Distribution of soil products to agriculture and home garden markets
-
Employment and training of long-term unemployed, Indigenous Australians, youth, and others facing barriers to employment
Then we will:
-
Reduce methane and CO₂ emissions
-
Restore soil health and increase agricultural resilience
-
Build a circular economy in local regions
-
Create dignified, place-based employment pathways
Outputs
-
Tonnes of waste diverted from landfill
-
Volume of soil products produced and distributed
-
Number of people employed through social enterprise roles
-
Hours of training delivered
-
Partnerships established with farms, councils, and community groups
Outcomes
Environmental:
-
Reduced methane and CO₂ emissions from landfills
-
Increased carbon sequestration in soils
-
Reduced reliance on synthetic fertilisers
-
Healthier local ecosystems
Social:
-
Increased employment and skills among disadvantaged Australians
-
Greater community engagement in sustainability
-
Stronger regional economic resilience through closed-loop systems
Sustainable Development Goals Alignment
Green Food Australia aligns with the following SDGs:
-
SDG 2: Zero Hunger (through improved soil fertility)
-
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
-
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
-
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
-
SDG 13: Climate Action
-
SDG 15: Life on Land
* Source: EPA & Project Drawdown – decomposing food waste emits approx. 1.9 tonnes CO₂e/tonne.
** Based on compost carbon stabilization data and emerging science on humus formation: 30–50% of the carbon in composted organics can be stored long-term in soil, especially under regenerative practices.
Our Commitment Moving Forward
As the business scales, we aim to:
-
Replicate our closed-loop waste-to-soil model in multiple regions
-
Formalise a social hiring program in partnership with local employment services
-
Launch an open-source impact dashboard for public accountability
-
Integrate Indigenous land and soil knowledge into product development and training programs
Essentially, all life depends upon the soil… There can be no life without soil and no soil without life; they have evolved together.
